History of the Institute

After India's independence, the first Prime Minister, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, recognized the need for a pioneer institute in Applied Physics and other physical sciences. An agreement was signed between the University of Allahabad and J.K. Trust, Kanpur on November 22, 1947, establishing the Department of Applied Physics and Technology at Muir College Campus. J.K. Charitable Trust funded the construction, leading to the institute's name: J.K. Institute of Applied Physics and Technology in the year 1976.

Inaugurated on April 14, 1949, by the first Prime Minister of India, Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, J.K. Institute of Applied Physics and Technology has continuously evolved to become a leading educational institution. Initially offering a three-year M.Sc. (Technology) post-graduate degree course, it later introduced a three-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree course in Electronics and Telecommunication. In 1982, a new course in Computer Science was introduced, leading to a Bachelor's degree in Science. The institute's commitment to excellence was recognized when it was sanctioned a prestigious DRDO Project in 1986, leading to the introduction of the M.Sc. Computer Science (Software) post-graduate course. The project played a vital role in nurturing skilled professionals who now contribute to the nation's security. Over the years, J.K. Institute has expanded its offerings, including a four-year B.Tech. (Electronics and Communication Engineering) degree course and a new branch of Engineering in Computer Science. In the academic session 2018-19, the institute further added a three-year Master of Computer Applications (MCA) course. With a remarkable placement record, its alumni are making significant contributions to the fields of engineering and computer science both in India and abroad, holding key positions in their respective domains.
